42 Wants and can’ts

Querer significa “to want” and “poder” significa “to be able to” or just “can”. These verbs conjugate with endings in the regular ER forms, O ES E EMOS EN, but have a change in the stem of the verb. QUERER changes E to IE, and PODER changes O to UE. Just the NOSOTROS form keeps the stem.

Querer = to want

  • quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, quieren
  • Sounds: kiéro, kiéres, kiére, kerémos, kiéren

Poder = to be able to

  • puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, pueden
  • Sounds: pwédo, pwédes, pwéde, podémos, pwéden

The verb right after one of these verbs remains like an infinitive.

  • Yo quiero bailar el fin de semana.
  • Yo no puedo esquiar porque me duelen las piernas.

If you are beginner, you can just memorize just the YO and TÚ forms to be able to use it:

  • QUIERO=I want
  • QUIERES=You want
  • PUEDO=I can
  • PUEDES=You can
