55 Sigue: “E” to “I” stem changing verbs

There are stem-changing verbs like QUERER=to want where the first E turns into IE as in QUIERO=I want or PODER=to be able to where O changes to UE in PUEDO=I can.

Other group of verbs change from E to I such as: PEDIR turns into PIDO (I ask for, I request, I order), SEGUIR turns into SIGO (I go on, I continue), SERVIR turns into SIRVO (I serve, I’m useful for).

In phrases, SEGUIR adds a verb with ANDO / IENDO verbs to mean “continue doing something”, like in “Soy yo” by Bomba Stereo:

  • Sigo bailando y escribiendo mis letras
  • Sigo cantando con las puertas abiertas
  • Atravesando por todas estas tierras

The song “El tiburón” by Proyecto 1 the refrain says: “No pares, sigue, sigue” which means “don’t stop, go on, go on”. This case doesn’t refer to a specific action, but it’s a cheering chant to continue dancing.

These verbs also change the E to I in the preterit (past for single event) in the third person: seguí, seguiste, siguió, seguimos siguieron
