16 O to UE and E to IE stem changes

Some verbs change one vowel in the stem: some change an O to UE, and others an E to IE. The only person that doesn’t change and keeps the stem is NOSOTROS. There’s no choice but memorizing the list of verbs that change this way.

Facts about stem changing verbs:

• The endings of AR verbs are the same as other AR verbs. The endings of ER verbs are the same of other ER verbs.
• It’s easier to remember these verbs in the YO and TÚ form before trying to get to the infinitive.
• Other verbs change E to I like sigo (=I follow) sigue (=you follow) from seguir or pido (=I ask) pides (=you ask).
• To make the He/she form, you just delete the S from the Tú form.

O to UE

• contar (=to count, to tell): Yo cuento (=I count), tú cuentas (=you count)
• costar (=to cost): Cuesta (=it costs)
• mostrar (=to show): Yo muestro (=I show), tú muestras (=you show)
• poder (=to be able to): Yo puedo (=I can), tú puedes (=you can)
• recordar (=to remember): Yo recuerdo (=I remember), tú recuerdas (=you remember)
• sonar (=to sound): Suena (=it sounds)
• mover (=to move): Yo muevo (=I move), tú mueves (=You move)
• llover (=to rain): Llueve (=it rains)

E to IE

• cerrar (=to close): Yo cierro (=I close), tú cierras (=you close)
• pensar (=to think): Yo pienso (=I think), tú piensas (=you think)
• empezar (=to begin): Yo empiezo (=I start), tú empiezas (=you start)
• entender (=to understand): Yo entiendo (=I understand), tú entiendes (=you understand)
• perder (=to lose, to waste): Yo pierdo (=I lose), tú pierdes (=you lose)
• querer (=to want): Yo quiero (=I want), tú quieres (=you want)
